File manager basics

Browse, edit, upload, rename, unpack and delete: everything the Files tab does, and its limits.

The Files tab of every server is a complete file manager in the browser.

  • Open a folder by clicking it; the breadcrumb at the top takes you back.
  • Edit a text file by clicking its name. The editor colours YAML, JSON, properties and TOML. Save writes it back; the server reads most configs only on restart.
  • New file / New folder from the buttons top right.
  • Upload drags files from your desktop into the browser window, or use the Upload button. Good for anything under ~100 MB per file.
  • Unarchive: right-click a .zip, .tar.gz or .rar and choose Unarchive. It extracts into the current folder.
  • Compress: select files, right-click, Archive. That is handy for downloading a whole folder.
  • Rename, Move, Copy, Delete: right-click menu. Delete asks once; there is no trash bin, so keep a backup of anything important.
  • Download individual files via the right-click menu.

When to use SFTP instead

Uploads over a few hundred megabytes, hundreds of files at once, or a whole modpack folder: use SFTP. It resumes on hiccups and does not depend on your browser staying open.

What you cannot do here

Change file permissions (you do not need to; Wings runs the server as the same user that owns the files). Access other servers' files (each server is isolated).
