Mods and game updates

Installing mods (modlets), which need players to install them too, and keeping the server on the right version through updates.

Mods

Mods (often called modlets) go into a Mods/ folder in the server root, with one subfolder per mod containing ModInfo.xml. Upload the mod folder, restart.

  • XML-only modlets (balance, recipes, loot) run server-side; players need nothing.
  • Mods with new assets (custom models, sounds, UI) or DLL code (Harmony patches) must be installed on every client too. The mod's page says which.
  • Overhauls (Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy, War3zuk) are full packs that both sides install; expect 12+ GB RAM.

The mod load order is alphabetical by folder name; prefix folders with numbers if order matters.

Updates

AUTO_UPDATE=1 checks Steam on every start. After a game update, restart from the panel. Mods that touch XML usually survive minor updates; DLL mods break on major ones (each new alpha/version) until the author updates. Until then, disable them by moving their folder out of Mods/.

Experimental branch

To run an experimental build set SRCDS_BETAID to the branch name Steam shows (e.g. latest_experimental) and reinstall. All players must opt into the same branch in Steam.
