Download a backup and keep it somewhere else

Getting the archive onto your own computer or cloud: the only backup that survives everything.

Backups → click the Download icon next to a backup. You get a .tar.gz file (a compressed archive). Depending on size and your connection this takes seconds to minutes.

Opening it

  • Windows: 7-Zip or WinRAR open .tar.gz (two steps: the .gz, then the .tar inside). Windows 11 can also open it directly in Explorer.
  • macOS / Linux: double-click, or tar -xzf backup.tar.gz in a terminal.

Inside is the server folder as it was: world/, plugins/, server.properties and so on.

Where to keep it

Anywhere that is not our infrastructure: your PC, an external drive, Google Drive, Dropbox. One copy a month is a sensible habit for a server people care about; before a big update, always.

Uploading it back

To restore from a downloaded archive: upload the .tar.gz via SFTP into the server root (server stopped), right-click → Unarchive, delete the archive, start. Or ask Kowalski to fetch it from a link and unpack it.
