Rules that save hours
- At most providers a CNAME cannot sit on the bare domain (
@). Use a name likeplay, or an A record. - Enter just the name (
play), not the fullplay.yourdomain.com. Most providers append the domain themselves; otherwise you end up withplay.yourdomain.com.yourdomain.com. - Remove old AAAA (IPv6) records for the same name. Browsers and Let's Encrypt prefer them and end up at the wrong server.
- Cloudflare: DNS only (grey cloud) for game names, and for website names at least until the certificate is issued.
- TTL: leave it on Auto or 3600. Changes spread within minutes to an hour.
Check a record
In a command prompt or terminal:
nslookup play.yourdomain.com
nslookup -type=SRV _minecraft._tcp.play.yourdomain.com
Any online "DNS lookup" tool works too. Or ask Kowalski in the panel: "Check the DNS records of play.yourdomain.com".
Where to find DNS settings
Cloudflare: domain → DNS → Records. At IONOS, Strato, Namecheap, GoDaddy and most others look for DNS, DNS settings or Advanced DNS in the settings of the domain.
